OMG.
A old-fashioned moralist (like me) will point out the fact that our new-fangled society is far more moralistic than the traditional society it replaced. Although in the areas of family life and sexual practice we have thrown off many restraints, in the areas of health and politics we now live under a Taliban.
Sending free formula home with moms has been shown in third world countries to actually lead to a huge spike in infant death. Mom's milk dries up, she can't afford more formula, formula gets diluted, baby dies of malnutrition.
In the first world, it has been closely linked to breastfeeding failure for mothers who were planning to bf all along.
It's bad medical practice, so hospitals shouldn't do it. Hospitals shoud never do anything linked to infant deaths. Hippocratic Oath, anyone?
BTW, that formula is not really free. Hospitals have to sign contracts to get it, much like schools sign contracts with Coke and Pepsi.
This reporter didn't do her research, plain and simple.
